Scaling and Polishing

What is Scaling and Polishing?

Brushing your teeth is the best thing you can do for your oral health, but it’s not enough. The mouth and teeth require a more thorough cleaning than just brushing to remove plaque and tartar buildup. This is when scaling and polishing come in. Scaling is cleaning with a toothbrush, followed by polishing with a soft-bristled brush.

Scaling and polishing are two of the most common dental procedures intended for prophylaxis (or prevention of disease).

Scaling is a dental process that involves removing the calculus deposits or stains on the teeth. It can be likened to scraping peeling paint on the wall, but it’s a bit more delicate since your teeth are actually part of your body!

Although scaling is performed on the teeth, it can also be applied to the roots particularly in cases when periodontal pockets have already formed. This happens when the bacteria have already invaded the gums. This process is known as root planning.

Polishing, on the other hand, is the process of smoothing the teeth as scaling can make them feel rough. During this time, your dentist may also provide additional protection to your teeth by applying a small amount of fluoride.
